Hurricanes at Landfall (1996 - Present)

The Hurricanes at Landfall (HAL) project, which began in 1996 as hurricane Fran came ashore, seeks to utilize the DOWs, mesonets and PODs to obtain upper-, middle- and near-ground kinematic and thermodynamic observations to provide greater insight as to the "inner workings" of these powerful storms. These efforts have also permitted the observation of intense small- (sub-kilometer-) scale boundary layer rolls, or embedded regions of higher winds thought to account for the majority of the damage observed (Wurman and Winslow 1998; Kosiba et al. 2013; Kosiba and Wurman 2014). Recent research utilizing HAL data have shown tornado-scale vortices (TSVs) and eyewall mesovortices (MVs) contribute to enhancing surface winds and damage (Wurman and Kosiba 2018). The HAL project has been vital in advancing our understanding of what goes on inside hurricanes. Who knows what we'll find next!
